Murray,
It seems that I have read that the KA-45 was used as a panoramic camera as well as a framing camera. In the Panoramic mode the film is moving as well as the slit of the shutter resulting in the high shutter speeds. In the framing mode the film is not moving thus the shutter speeds are slower as only the slit of the shutter moves.
I would assume that the film moves in the opposite direction of the shutter slit during panoramic mode to produce the high speeds. If memory serves, I believe the film is moving at 4 feet per second. I also seem to recall that the leading edge of the shutter curtain is electronically controlled to adjust the size of the slit and that the trailing curtain is stationary relative to the leading edge.
Regards,
Dennis A.

P.S. I also have a KA-45 and find these very interesting. Also:The Cuban missiles were first spotted by a U-2 flight but it was the KA-45 that was used in follow-up missions.
