Frank Earl offered an excellent suggestion - to shape the meter like a monocular, not like a pistol. I can second this from personal experience.
Many years ago I was stopped (for speeding, no traffic on the road) in Joshua Tree National Monument. The Park Ranger (armed, by the way) insisted on searching my car and got quite agitated when he saw my Pentax V in the trunk until I could show him it wasn't dangerous except to photons.
