The first statement I quoted clearly does imply that there should be no
such preference pane -- this decision can be made by the developers,
therefore it should be made by them.  My point was that the quoted
passage from the HIG didn't support the original premise.

(For the sake of full disclosure, I have never intentionally used the
 the type-ahead find feature, thus it has only served to prevent me from
 sooner discovering that the browser isn't doing what I think it is,
 I have never found a browser's default font settings to be acceptable,
 and wore socks for the first time in months only a couple weeks ago
 with the onset of cooler weather in Michigan)
