To all those that want extension mapping or content sniffing how would you handle this http://www.them.ws/stuff/forum/ava/index.php?

Content sniffing is not based on the extension. If you look at your example file, though, you can see that the OS knows how to handle it just fine. Try the following exercise in a terminal window:

[leela:~] gbeier% curl -C - -O "http://www.them.ws/stuff/forum/ava/index.php?";
% Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Curr.
Dload Upload Total Current Left Speed
100 3015 0 3015 0 0 9363 0 --:--:-- 0:00:00 - --:--:-- 51305
[leela:~] gbeier% file index.php\?
index.php?: JPEG image data, JFIF standard 1.01, resolution (DPI), 72 x 72

See the file man page for an explanation of how this is accomplished without MIME types or the file extension.

[For the record, I *like* Camino's current behavior. When I've got my developer hat on, I appreciate the immediate and clear signal that I've misconfigured my server. When I've got my user hat on, I like the big warning that the developer/host/owner of the site I'm using is not competent to configure their server properly. Should some sort of guessing, la file(1) be implement, I would appreciate a way to disable it and ensure that Camino strictly obey MIME types as it does today.]
