Bugzilla bug 220807 deals with the issue of binary files being sent with text/plain mime-types. A patch has been written. The powers that be in Mozilla-land approve of the approach taken. I suspect all the remaining implementation details will be worked out and it will make its appearance in the nightly builds "real soon now".
Nice. I tried the patch with a previous problem case: http://www.squeaksoft.com/products/MailCountX/MailCountX-0.2beta.dmg
and it fixed it very nicely. Note that the patch to 220807 will not fix those truly pathological cases where HTML is sent with a content-type of text/plain (like this: http://jetsetrecords.com/default.asp). It does fix all the cases I can find where garbage is displayed, though.
