I just really noticed it now. It doesn't bug me all that much (although I'm working on a 768*1024 12-inch screen, so everything is a bit smaller). I do agree with the sentiment about the OS in general - it especially bugs me that there's almost always too much free space in toolbars (Panther Finder), and, as always, the $#%@ lack of adjustable Finder grid spacing (even Windows has that!).
Another thing is that the bookmark-menus kind of look like they're just floating there - they don't look anchored to anything. I don't know exactly sure how you'd "fix" this - maybe highlight the bookmark like the "bubble addresses" in Mail.
