first of all: a big thank you to Mike Pinkerton and all the other contributors for giving Camino such a big push into the right direction and sorry for this long post but I just had to get this off my chest. The big overhaul I saw in the latest nightly is really impressive and very encouraging for Camino's future.
In the UI department, it is also not bad to have some ongoing discussion on this list again that makes me feel that this project is alive and well.
However, IMHO there are two aspects missing in the whole discussion and the current implementation that I would like to see dealt with:
1. The never-ending tabs discussion: As a long-time subscriber to this list I have seen this topic discussed many many times. Meanwhile, I have seen other tab implementations I like and some I don't like.
Enter Omniweb 5 Beta: Now that is a tab implementation that must have been inspired by this list's tab discussion by Simon Woodside et al. a long time ago (hello Omni people ;-) - and having used it, I have to say: it sucks. It looks good but it uses way too much of my valuable screen estate horizontally. Therefore, that drawer is a really terrible idea. And it is also by no means comparable to Apple's preview app because a PDF typically has a lot more pages (imagine skimming through a PDF file with browser tabs - might also be terrible... - it just _isn't_ the same idea)
Enter Safari with tabs: one thing that really bugs me about Panther is the increasingly inconsistent look of apps. Camino and Mail used to live together in perfect visual harmony. Safari and Mail just don't... However, there is one thing about Safari I really like that Apple just got right: the tabs are not centered like the current Camino tabs and the close button is on the left.
What makes the difference?
Well, first of all, this is the Mac and not Windows. There are no other occurrences of close buttons on the right. Moreover, the combination of having them on the right and the tabs being centered is the real problem for me here: with the current Camino tabs, I find myself constantly searching for the close button and the right tab that keeps moving and resizing as I close individual tabs in a bookmarked tab set. To me, this is much more important than the tabs' current look.
Does anyone agree with me that a close button on the left and left-aligned tabs might be a good idea?
2. The new icon set: I have to agree with some posters here that the new standard icons just don't match neither the other icons in Camino nor do they match those of Mail.app - to me, they just look like those from Firefox (which is _not_ a native Mac application) or those from Safari (which is infected with the Brushed metal virus). If those can be made more consistent at least across the whole visual presentation of Camino, this would be a real leap forward.
Thanks for considering. Keep up the good work on Camino.
