(accidentally sent this out with "Re: Contents of
Camino digest..." in subject line, re-sending to put
it in the thread...apologies for the duplication)

MonkeyFood's More Internet looks like a pretty useful
app, but I wasnt able to get it to help Camino open
.url files...has anyone had luck with this?

Since my posting Ive come across more info regarding
.webloc & .url files.

Heres an argument that favors .url files as the way
to go for cross platform compatibility, even going so
far as to suggest an applescript that enables Safari
to create .url files!

Now Id rather not use anything MS. As I understand,
the whole idea of Netscape open-sourcing their code
via Mozilla was to prevent MS from gaining a lock on
the browser market & unduly controlling html
standards. But I do wish to keep an eye out for
compatibility. Does anyone know how .webloc files and
.url files fare in a Linux environment? One day the
plan is to convert the old Dell to Linux and network
it with the iMac...

Evidently .webloc files are some sort of clipping
file, with URL data stored in the resource fork. Is
there a way to edit data in the resource fork?
Sometimes its handy to truncate a url, removing
everything after the .org/ or .com/ for a homepage
url, for example:
http://www.gaiam.com rather than
http://www.gaiam.com/retail/default.asp
Ive noticed the /retail... portion tends to change
over time, giving the truncated url more longevity.

>From the BareBones Software help desk came a neat
trick -- dragging URL text from any application to the
Desktop or a Finder window creates a .webloc file.
Their Super Get Info app provides a non-editable view
of a .weblocs URL (something Apples get info doesnt
do, at least in 10.2.8). Selecting the text of the
first part of the URL and dragging it to the desktop
creates the truncated .welbloc file. Maintaining a
descriptive file name requires an additional step of
renaming the file, as well as deleting the old file.
It would be great if there were some way to edit the
url data in a .webloc file. In creating new .webloc
files, I now realize its possible to select just the
desired portion of the url in the location field and
drag that to the finder.

Also: Dragging a .webloc file into a terminal window
places the web location stored in the .webloc file on
the command line

BTW, after filing bug report 243322 it turned out to
be a Dup of bug 107959, so the .url issue is covered
there.

Thanks,
John
