I tried deleting the Camino folder from
~/Users/me/Library/Application Support and then relaunched Camino but
the problem persists.

Have you tried with a new profile? I remember that something like
that happened to someone else and the workaround was to delete a
certain file from the profile.
As the archive of the mailinglist doesn't offer an appropriate
search function I wasn't able to dig up the thread.
Just give it a try - move your Camino directory out of the way and try again.
