You probably have other windiws/tabs open with animations (I don't think Gmail has them). This is something that happens a lot when using phpBB forums with emoticons showing next to the content editing area. I solved this by using a "hidden" pref to show only 1 iteration of animations.
I guess also that this problem affects especially old machines (my G4 466, for example). Machines built in the last 2 years are likely to suffer less.
