I finally gave up and am using Safari and the trouble is gone. Would anyone like to try to reproduce the problem?
Go to http://www.dailyom.com/cgi-bin/userinfo/settings.cgi?subscribe=1 and sign up. Then try to upgrade to the Community membership (it's all free). Under Camino I keep getting login dialogs. Finally the sysop set up a profile for me. That worked and got me in... until I tried to edit the profile and then, once again, I got repeating login dialogs. Under Safari, I'm in and editing the profile.
