_IF_  I take Firefox and spoof the User-Agent to be:
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X; en-US; rv:1.8.0.7)
Gecko/20060911 Camino/1.0.3

then, as you said, that vertical strip where there is a pointy-finger
allowing expansion of map ..... is _not_  there

If I take Safari, I get the arrow and functionality of that vertical frame.

If I take Camino and tell it to tell Google-Maps that it is actually
Safari, then the functionality of the map is normal.

My conclusion? Call Google and 'splain to them that their code has
forgotten a great browser with a lot of great people ...
