Another thing to check is whether you have the Speakable items on and
it's capturing your escape key. Just go to the System Prefs -> Speech
Recognition -> Settings.

That would qualify as a bug, if it fails.
But it works fine for me using the same build and the next one
(2007112302, 1.6a1pre). Running 10.3.9 and 10.4.11.
What OS are you using ?
Maybe you should file a bug in Bugzilla ?
I'm using 10.5.1. I'm not sure if the upgrade was when 'esc'
began to
fail.
No input managers or anything like that ?
You could test by running Camino with Troubleshoot Camino ?
