Hi Anita,
Patty here with my thoughts on what you have asked. As far as when to introduce a
bottle I do not know exactly. With my daughter Joslyn I only breastfed for the first
two weeks and a half and then had major surgery that kept me from being able to
continue breastfeeding. I had hospital grad pumps and nothing helped. For our son
Shamus weight was an issue where a doctor and a nurse put some worry into us. So I did
some of me and then some in a bottle after a short time. So I have never had a baby
where it has been after four weeks or around as far as the bottle intro goes.
We had our daughter use a variety of bottles in the begining. We have used the
bottles that have come with the breast pumps like avent. We have used the playtex bag
in a bottle with a combination of differnt style nipples that they manufacture. From
silicon to rubber to latex. As well as the natural shaped ones that are designed to
resemble to some extent a womans nipple. We have used the Playtex Vent Aire. We have
used different evenflow bottles. We used the Gerber New Traditions bottles and nipples
as well.
Nothing has worked as well for us as the Dr. Brown bottles. We stuck with the
widder ones. They make about three or four widths of bottles for Dr. Browns. The
slimmer the bottle the slimmer the nipple as the same for the widder the bottle the
wider the nipple. Our son Shamus right now will not latch onto any bottle other than
the Dr. Browns. The Dr. Brown bottles really helped to reduce the spitup of our
daughter and as well for our son. Now with the Dr. Brown bottles there are more parts
to wash. The bottles have six parts to them as most of the compatition only has four
parts.
Back to the introduction of a bottle. Well like I said we introduced different
bottles at different stages to see what works. Our daughter did not want a playtex bag
in a bottle, bottle for the first couple of months then she took to it. After that
though she took to them and to a variety of bottles. Though the ones she loved the
most were the Dr. Browns. We liked the fact with all that we tried these ones were the
ones that gave her and now our son the least amount of spitup.
As far as where to get them the only place that we have seen the size Dr. Browns
we liked are at Babies R US. Most of the other stores that carry Dr. Browns have the
slender bottles. I hope that this will help you out. There are so many choices out
there. Also remember that all babies are so different one from the next. What works
for us may not for you.
God Bless You,
Sincerely Patty (Mommy to Joslyn & Shamus)

Hi Folks--
I just got off the phone with our hospital's lactation consultant who now has me
worried.
I called because we have heard from our pediatrician that if we want to pump and
provide a bottle, we need to have the baby try the bottle around week 4. (We're now at
week 4 1/2). If we wait too much longer, the baby won't take a bottle, so they say. I
originally wanted to know what bottle/nipple was recommended so as not to interfere
with breastfeeding.
I told the consultant that breastfeeding is going really well and that our son has
gained 3 lbs in 3 weeks. She then about had a hissy saying that I was overfeeding him.
And that his fussiness (I never mentioned he was fussy) was due to being overfed. The
only fussiness we have is that at 5:00 am he has a little gas, my husband gets up and
they bond, the baby passes his gas, and then about 7:00 he's hungry again. This is an
incredibly mellow baby! But now this woman has me completely worried that I have an
"over abundance of milk supply" and my baby has an high suck need and something is
wrong here. I'm feeding on demand (which I informed her I was not going to change) and
the guy usually only eats from one breast and then, if he takes the other breast, only
takes a nibble from it.
Questions I need help on:
1) Is there a time frame for getting the baby on the bottle? Do you have a "routine"
you're supposed to use (our ped said one bottle/day for a week and the 2-3 times/week
after that) We're pumping not using formula.
2) Is there a bottle that is better for not interfering with breastfeeding?
3) Is there such a thing as overfeeding a baby???
Thank you for all thoughts on this! You can email me privately: [EMAIL PROTECTED] if
you'd like.
