============================================================ DIGITAL DIGEST http://www.marconews.com Aug. 16, 2004 ============================================================ Subscribe to the Naples Daily News: http://web.marconews.com/circulation/ ** TOP NEWS ** HURRICANE: On a day when Hurricane Charley launched one of the largest emergency relief efforts since Sept. 11, storm refugees in Punta Gorda depended on neighbors and good-hearted strangers to get by. HURRICANE: More than 40 members of the Eastside Baptist Church one-third of the congregation saw each other for the first time since Hurricane Charley ripped their homes and lives to shreds Friday. They took courage from seeing each other, from seeing who had survived. When many of them spoke, their voices quivered. HURRICANE: Few places have been more devastated by the wrath of Hurricane Charley than Pine Island. And few places have been so ignored. On Friday morning, the barrier island was a pristine and wooded landscape of gorgeous manors, enormous farms and quaint mobile homes that harbored farmworkers and retirees alike. Now it is a hellish expanse of wrecked buildings, boarded-up businesses and pulverized neighborhoods where hungry children play with drooping power lines on sewage-soaked grass. HURRICANE: Elizabeth Atkinson's story was a similar one over the weekend as Bonita Beach residents salvaged windows, signs and cars. With palm trees snapped in half and sand scattered along the roadway, Bonita's barrier island was the hardest area hit in the city. It had too many assisted-living centers. There are about 25 assisted-living centers in the Bonita Springs and Naples areas and nearly 15 nursing homes. That number is not small, but the demand for senior housing keeps growing. After oversaturation, some area communities are now expanding and others have waiting lists, including Moorings Park, The Carlisle and Bentley Village in Collier County. ** IN SPORTS ** GOLF: The only birdie Vijay Singh made all day was the only one that mattered. All but counted out of the PGA Championship with a putter that failed him, Singh took advantage of a late collapse by Justin Leonard to get into a three-way playoff Sunday at Whistling Straits, then made the only birdie over the three extra holes to win the final major of the year. It was an amazing turnaround for the 41-year-old Fijian, whose career is defined by second chances. OLYMPICS COVERAGE ... from Scripps Howard News Services team ... plus blogs.
