True Fundamentalism
--Michael Medved

A recent page of letters to the editor in the New York Times proved the proposition
that the secular left is more fanatical, more fundamentalist, than the religious right.

Public editor Daniel Okrent drew hysterical denunciation for his candid admission that
The Times showed a consistent liberal bias. Robert Glatzer of Spokane responded to
this revelation by asking: "Why give the right's views the same weight as the left's?
Why present religiously based arguments as equally valid?" Zack Subin of Massachusetts
decried the very idea of seeking balance on the issue of gay rights: "Most people who
are antigay or creationists base their views on the mindless repetition of tradition,
ignorance and prejudice," he wrote. "It is appropriate to privilege tolerance over
bigotry."

In other words, the liberal readers of The Times not only want the arguments of their
opponents to be answered, they want them to be ignored-a depressing example of
intolerant fundamentalism.
