IN THIS ISSUE: * Windows XP SP2 Releases * Sharp Brings 3D to the Desktop * Inside Intel's Wireless Labs * Unscrambling Digital Music Confusion ============================================================ Windows XP SP2 Releases Windows XP Service Pack 2 released to manufacturing last week after an unexpected 2-day delay due to unspecified issues. Microsoft is simultaneously releasing the final code and a Preinstall Kit to OEMs. The software giant will also be refreshing the Windows XP retail package gradually, so by the end of October, consumers will be able to buy a boxed version of Windows XP SP2. Now the company is bringing that same glasses-free 3D technology to the desktop with the groundbreaking Sharp LL-151-3D desktop monitor. You can use the 15-inch LL-151-3D with any software and graphics card that currently support OpenGL 3D displays with glasses. But with the Sharp monitor, you won't need the glasses to see the images in realistic, immersive 3D. The campus includes the company's wireless networking group, where Intel develops and tests its wireless technologies. As you can imagine, Intel has the resources to do some serious testing. The labs contain numerous Faraday cages (conducting cages used to shield electronic equipment), made of copper, ranging in size from a box just big enough to store a laptop to a small room able to hold a workbench, test equipment, and a couple of people. While the lab and its test equipment are fascinating--most engineers would love to have this array of equipment--it's Intel's dedication to "real-world" testing that really intrigued and impressed us. Nevertheless, digital music is selling briskly online, and innovative new strategies for distributing music and sidestepping proprietary formats are appearing. RealNetworks shook up the music scene when it announced that its new Harmony software will allow users to play digital tunes bought from the company's online music store on Apple iPods as well as other kinds of music players, including the new Microsoft-compatible ones that are appearing.
