VOICE PLUS DATA EQUALS INNOVATION
========================================================================
Posted August 13, 2004 3:00 PM Pacific Time

The once vastly separate worlds of corporate data and telephony have
collided. IP-based enterprise phone systems are invading corporate
branch offices, telecommuter home offices, and call centers everywhere.
Sooner or later, voice will be just another digital packet on the IP
network, and telephony will be just another managed application about
which IT must worry.

VERIZON'S ADVANCED OUTSOURCING SOLUTION
========================================================================
Posted August 13, 2004 3:00 PM Pacific Time

As VoIP has taken hold in the enterprise, carriers have beefed up their
infrastructures with IP switches and MPLS (multiprotocol label
switching) backbones that allow them to manage different service levels
to accommodate voice. For several years, AT&T, Verizon, and other
carriers have also offered integration services to help companies deploy
and manage IP telephony. Verizon recently announced it has started
migrating to a local VoIP infrastructure, a gradual process that will
leave existing legacy equipment in place but use VoIP equipment --
mostly from Nortel Networks -- to replace aging equipment and to
increase capacity.

SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) was actually late to the VoIP party.
The original IP PBXes were mostly based on a collection of International
Telecommunications Union standards called H.323. SIP, a text-based
protocol that draws on HTTP and MIME, grew out of research at Columbia
University and didn't become a real force until it was adopted by the
IETF in 1999.

WORKSTATION SHOWDOWN: XEON VS. OPTERON
========================================================================
Posted August 13, 2004 3:00 PM Pacific Time

In business, dual-processor workstations are the trucks of desktop
computing. Pickups aren't very glamorous, but when you need to move lots
of stuff from one point to another efficiently, glamour isn't the point.
You need a truck.
