Shark Tank: Because really, who can afford to waste time?

This nationwide retailer switches to Windows 2000 and implements
roaming profiles, which let users' desktop preferences follow them to
any PC at any of the company's sites. At least that's the way it's
supposed to work, says an IT pilot fish working there.

"There are numerous problems with the roaming profile as it's set up,"
fish says. "If a user signs onto a PC at some remote locations, the
profile can get corrupted, rendering access to Lotus Notes impossible
and access to shared drives problematic. Such problems have been
routine, and resolution can take days.

"And the company has locked down the PCs so most users can't save
anything to a local drive, install any new programs or drivers or run
most programs that aren't on 'the list.'

"This can be a real heartache when someone is at another site for days
at a time to do software installs or troubleshooting and can't get at
e-mail, calendar, project documentation or diagnostic tools. Veteran
travelers have learned to duplicate files or programs at remote sites
and travel with armloads of any documentation that might be needed."

Which means that two years after the roaming profiles went live,
desktop sysadmins have a hundred or more problem tickets open on any
given day.

But none of those problem tickets belongs to the VP of IT. "He has
exempted himself from the roaming profile requirement," says fish.

"Why? He says there are too many problems with it and it was causing
him to waste too much time."
