1. Internet Heading to Light Speed
>From Wired.com (Topic: Nanotechnology), Aug. 17:
A new nanotechnology that eliminates network bottlenecks
could help create a web surfers' paradise that is 100 times
faster than today's Internet. Fiber-optic networks capable
of sending information at 10 Gbps or 40 Gbps are being
rolled out around the world and under the oceans to connect
everyone to everything. But getting information to pass from
one high-speed network to another can be slowed by
electronic switching technology.

2. U.S. Firms: Doing Business in China Tough, but Critical
>From USA Today (Topic: China), Aug. 17:
New York tech component maker Corning expects to sell 10% to
15% fewer fiber optics this quarter than the previous one --
and it blames Beijing.

3. RealNetworks Tries to Core Apple
>From The Washington Post (Topic: Digital Music), Aug. 17:
(Registration Required)
RealNetworks really knows how to pick a fight. First, the
Seattle-based company landed a sucker punch on Apple
Computer last month with its new Harmony technology that
allows songs sold from Real's online music store to play on
Apple's iPod digital music player.

4. System Uses 'CallerID' Method to Beat Phishers
>From eWeek (Topic: Phishing), Aug. 16:
WholeSecurity has teamed up with auction provider eBay to
announce a new technology that automatically sniffs out
sites that could house so-called "phishing" attacks.

5. Nanotech Research Spending Seen Reaching $8.6 Bln
>From Reuters (Topic: Nanotechnology), Aug. 16:

field of nanotechnology should rise about 10 percent this
year to $8.6 billion, a research firm said on Monday.

6. Warner's Tryst With Bloggers Hits Sour Note
>From The New York Times (Topic: Blogging), Aug. 16:

Warner Brothers Records pulled out all the stops recently to
promote a rock band, the Secret Machines, on the Internet.
But there is one stop that might have been better left
unpulled.

Inc., STMicroelectronics and Broadcom Corp., on Thursday
said they will propose a new wireless networking standard up
to 10 times the speed of the current generation.

8. A Big Fly in the Open-Source Soup
>From Business Week (Topic: Open Source), August 13:
The open-source movement has had a remarkable run of success
that has seen software such as the Linux operating system
and the Apache Web server emerge as major challenges to
Microsoft. However, the movement is now facing a crisis. At
its heart is a question that has been around from the very
beginning: How does software owned by everyone and by no one
survive in a world where copyrights and patents shape the
legal landscape? The question is being forced on a number of
fronts, and if open source is to play an important role in
software's future, the issue will have to be dealt with
decisively.
