August 19, 2004 on this day: In 1960 American spy plane pilot Francis Gary Powers was convicted of spying by the U.S.S.R. At this time the Cold War weapons race was at a fever pitch. U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower and Russian Premier Nikita Khrushchev both hoped for improved relations between the two countries. However, both sides actively spied on each other, and on May 1, 1960, the Soviets shot down a U2 spy plane flown by Powers. Initially, Eisenhower denied that the U.S. had engaged in espionage flights. In response, the Soviets displayed Powers. When forced to acknowledge the truth, an embarrassed Eisenhower accepted full responsibility. Powers remained in jail in the Soviet Union until 1962 when he was exchanged for a captured Soviet spy.
