Can't Anybody Ship a Product on Time Around Here?

That's what our Microsoft Watcher wants to know. She's heard
execs talk up, down and sideways about how many cool
products are in the product queue up in Redmond--yet with
little or no delivery. Now that XP SP2 is out, will that
unclog the logjam? Not likely, she claims. Read her analysis
to find out why you won't be seeing much amazing stuff from
Microsoft--at least not on time--and what else is starting
to slip. One thing they have shipped, though--a new preview
version of 64-bit Windows. They even came up with a catchy
new name for the product. Our story tells all.

Getting Ready for SP2

Now that the new version of XP is out, you'll have to start
thinking about what you need to do to prepare. We've put
together a series of steps that'll help you prepare your
computer (or computers) for Microsoft's biggest Windows
upgrade in years. There's a lot to be done, so get to it -
and bring our article along for help! We'll make sure you
avoid any nasty system and application failures along the
way.

Oracle Gets Patch Religion

Maybe what got them off the pot was our article early
Wednesday--the one where we lambasted the mono-database
culture for not releasing a boatload of overdue security
updates. But the mega-DB company has now admitted to taking
a shot of digital Metamucil, and says it will deliver
patches on a regular basis. Just how regular? Our story has
the details.

Kiss Your Paper Checks Goodbye

Back in the early '80s, I worked for an airline with a
lucrative night route--flying paper checks from regional
banks in Vermont to a clearinghouse in Boston. But if the
feds have their way, your bank will likely use digital
imaging, and paper checks will no longer have to return to
their bank of origin. And that means you may never see those
checks again. For details on exactly how it'll work, and
what it might mean for your bank account, see our special
story.

Money Creams Quicken

Well, it wasn't that dramatic. But based on our extensive
lab tests, it appears that Microsoft has finally come up
with a personal financial management product that's better
than Intuit's flagship. Our review pits the two head-to-head
and comes up with a surprise winner--Microsoft!

Google IPO Ends, Controversy Continues

It's all over but the trading on the exchange, as Google's
IPO is officially finished. And even though the SEC gave it
a clean bill of health, not everyone is happy. Our own
columnists, it seems, are the most peeved. First, we've got
John Pallatto, saying that the SEC really should have halted
this whole bungled IPO, and then David Coursey, who thinks
the whole structure of the company needs to be thrown out
for something fairer. Our stories, and their analysis, puts
a not-so-sweet cap on this fascinating affair.

9 Dual Layer DVD Drives Reviewed

Imagine almost 9 gigabytes of storage on one DVD! That's
what the latest crop of burners promise. But how well do
they actually do? We put the first 9 dual-layer drives to
the test to see if they actually work--first--and how fast
they are too. Our exhaustive analysis details who's on top,
and which ones should be avoided.

A Better Way for Tech Support

That's what Lance Ulanoff claims he's figured out. Our
PCMag.com Exec Producer says that it's not so much what you
know, but how you say it. In an twist, he'd like companies
to source globally, but support locally. Sounds right to me.
Read his analysis for more.

A Handheld Video Player that Works

I've been down on the whole category of handheld video
players with those super small screens. But now Archos has
shipped its second generation player, and it has a number of
redeemable features. First, it'll record directly from your
TV, cable or SAT box, making it a sort of portable TiVo. And
it's small and light--and much improved over the AV300
series. Check out our review and decide for yourself if half
a thousand bucks is worth it to carry Letterman in your
pocket.

ExtremeTech Announces Winner of Case Mod Contest

I'm not going to spoil the surprise, because you really have
to head over and see the pictures. But after hundreds of
amazing entries, there's a winner to the custom case mod
contest. All I can say is--it's the first case that actually
needs cleaning on a weekly basis. Check out the winner, and
a special story on how the custom case was actually crafted!
