Oracle: Delay in Patch Release Related to Shift to Monthly
Release Roll-Up

I go on vacation for a week, and what do I find when I get
back? Oracle still hadn't issued patches for a gazillion--or
34, or 30, or however many, since Oracle hadn't nailed down
the number as of the time I was writing this
newsletter--critical security vulnerabilities in Oracle
Database, Application Server and Enterprise Manager.

Critical flaws as in, critical flaws it's known about since
the winter. That's a long, long eight months. What gives?
Turns out that the king 'o' databases is moving to a very
Microsoft-ish monthly patch roll-up. Is that good for users,
or bad? I'm hearing both types of feedback, but one thing's
for sure: Lots of people want to see the "Unbreakable"
people eat a pile of grief, as Microsoft does so very often
for security goofs.

Read the rest of Lisa's column.

1. News: Oracle to Issue Monthly Patch Roll-Ups

The company has fixed all the critical vulnerabilities
reported by Next Generation Security Software in the main
code base for the Oracle products in question. The reason
it's been sitting on patches is because it's readying itself
to begin monthly patch set releases, with the current patch
crop slated to arrive Aug. 31. Get the details.

2. News: Oracle Sits on Fixes

The longer Oracle had the patches and didn't release them,
the madder users were getting. See what they had to say
about the problem here.

3. News: Oracle Gives Partners a Crack at Bigge$t Accounts

Oracle has set up a new program called Cover the
Subsidiaries, through which its 2,800 North American
partners will be able to sell goods and services into its
top--read, over $1 billion in annual revenues--accounts.
It's all part of Oracle's ongoing effort to mend fences
between partners and its historically aggressive direct
sales force. But will it work?

4. News: Judge Will Unseal Sensitive Documents in DOJ-Oracle
Case

Lawyers for companies including ADP, Accenture, Ford,
Fidelity, IBM and Microsoft lined up to plead that Judge
Walker not unseal sensitive documents in the DOJ-Oracle
antitrust case. Walker made it clear, however, that he would
unseal documents unless he were convinced that doing so
would materially harm companies' business prospects. Stay
tuned.

5. News: Javalobby Site to Deliver Java Documentation to
Developers Via Dynamic Database

Javalobby rolled out a new community site that uses a
dynamic database to help developers access Java tool
documentation and libraries and also to cross-link, search
and supply user-contributed notes. Find out more about this
project here.
