HURRICANE: On the ninth day after Hurricane Charley slashed a path through Arcadia and
its neighboring rural communities, volunteers were on a search-and-rescue mission to
find those who had fallen through the cracks.

INSURANCE: While Hurricane Charley is little more than a breeze off the Eastern
Seaboard, homeowners in Southwest Florida may fear a second wind is coming from their
insurance company. Rates on homeowners' policies soared after Hurricane Andrew ravaged
South Florida in 1992. It was a lesson in preparation that insurance companies had to
learn the hard way. The difference now is the Florida insurance industry is ready for
a major catastrophe.

ROADWAY DELAYS: Some Southwest Florida roadway projects may be delayed because of
Hurricane Charley and work stoppages in the hardest hit counties. Many main roadways
throughout Charlotte, Lee, Hardee and DeSoto counties were under construction before
the hurricane made landfall Aug. 13, devastating Charlotte County and northern Lee
County's coastal communities before devouring the more sparsely populated communities
to the north.

HOMEOWNERS: Faraway owners of luxe mansions in North, or Upper Captiva Island have
forged an online system to report on their vacation homes in the secluded community
accessible only by boat. Lee County officials are estimating 100 percent of North
Captiva's few hundred homes to be damaged. Estimates peg 60 percent of damaged
property to be major and 30 percent of structures destroyed, Lee officials said.

FIRECATS WIN: The Florida Firecats have faced numerous hurdles this arenafootball2
season. Lineman Dunstan Anderson died in a car accident in May. Receiver Cainon Lamb's
mother passed away in July. A few tough losses were sprinkled in between. Then came
Hurricane Charley last weekend. But for all the hardship they've overcome, their next
obstacle is a welcome one. Florida advanced to its second ArenaCup game by beating
American Conference top-seed Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 41-31 on Sunday at Wachovia Arena.

** PERSPECTIVE **

EDITORIAL: It is both remarkable and laudable when surviving family members launch
their own investigation of a deadly traffic wreck after the official probe comes up
short. The follow-up by kin of Ohioan Michael Moritz, 68, speaks to their devotion to
him and justice. We hesitate to call the fatal February 2002 wreck at Pelican Bay on
U.S. 41 North an accident. It was for Moritz, a passenger in a car driven by his wife.
It may not have been for the pickup truck's hit-run driver, who chose to break speed
laws and perhaps others.

** IN NEAPOLITAN **

FAKE BAKE: One of the first tanning lotions came out streaky, though, and gave skin an
almost fluorescent orangeish cast. Worst of all, pity the poor user who got caught in
the rain. Man Tan, it turned out, was anything but waterproof. Today, thanks to
technological advances, a world of user-friendly and effective self-tanning products
is readily available. And sales are brisk.

HURRICANE AFTERMATH: On the Sunday after Hurricane Charley struck, Naples business
owner Laurie Andrea heard on WINK-TV News that DeSoto and Hardee counties were hard
hit and that the Hendry County Sheriff's Office was spearheading a relief drive. She
reacted immediately, driving to Costco in Naples to buy food, water and other
essentials. She loaded everything in her car and drove to the sheriff's office in
LaBelle to drop it off. On her long drive home, Andrea thought there had to be a
better way to help. Then she came up with one.
