Re: [wm] Re: Woohoo!Cool! Told Jas about it and he said that some places are permitted
to do that but it's worth looking in to! KimM

  Kim,
Here are a couple websites that might give you a little background info.

www.fora.org - Fort Ord Reuse Authority - they are the people who are planning what
to do with the land
www.fortordcleanup.com - this site will have all the prescribed burn info

Wow! I don't know how they do it cuz we have to jump through some nasty hoops with
environmental permits. 90% of my job is creating the controls for the offgas system
that treats all that "smoke" so it can be safely emitted to the atmosphere! hehe Yep,
gotta bring up this place in our next meeting! Kim M

Yep...they just burn everything...the land and all the stuff that they don't want
with it. The last time they did it the sky was orange and the sun was red. There was
smoke everywhere and it was brown. There's a lot of icky stuff out there, that's for
sure.

Controlled burns..you mean they just burn all the old ordnance? Now how safe is
that? I know when Jas does his stuff, some of it explodes in the chamber...it's quite
the noise and a bit freaky knowing those are bombs going off. And I'll seriously
mention it to Jas...you never know, this system is mobile and so is a new one we're
both working on now for a place in NV...new business for the company is always good.

Makes sense to me :-) Maybe he should come out here to Fort Ord and do
something there. The do controlled burns every once in awhile, but the last one got
away from them. Not too safe considering they amount of people that live there.

It's a fairly complicated device but long story short, it's a big electrode
that uses power to burn stuff...like what he was doing was getting rid of old army
ordnance..you know, old bombs, grenades, etc that are too old to use, unsafe and
need to be disposed of. They bring this mobile system in and process this waste into
a 99.9999999 (enough 9's for ya? hehe) non-leachable safe material. They can also
process hazardous waste, diesel fueled soil, even radioactive and nuclear
waste....good enough to pave a playground with. BUT, it's a very picky process. Jas
designs the torches and the systems that run them but these aren't a very economical
way to do disposal yet. The torches have a short life span and Jas's designs are
working on making the torches better and to last longer. Clear as mud? hehe Kim M

Yay! I'm glad he's coming home early for you and your kids :-)

        What does the torch do?

        Good news and bad news...

The bad news is the torches died and had to be shipped home from WV. Not a
great thing for the company but they must have been beyond field repair and Jas
did manage to limp them along so they lasted just 2 days short of what would have
been the end of testing.

Good news...He is currently shutting down the system. The system needs
~24-36 hrs to cool to safe storing level....and then he'll be home Friday at noon
instead of Saturday. It's only a day earlier but I'm very excited and I'm sure the
kids will be too! Kim M
