Yahoo! Enters Domain Name Game

Vying for an even larger slice of the Internet commerce pie
than it already has, Yahoo! today announced it will begin
offering domain-name registration services to individuals
and businesses. Registering a Web address through Yahoo!
will cost just $9.95 a year--a bargain compared to the $35
the leaders in the field (Network Solutions and Register.com)
charge, and more in line with cut-rate rivals (such as
GoDaddy.com) that don't have Yahoo!'s brand recognition. More
is available here:

America Online Launches Low-Cost PC

America Online, provider of e-mail and Internet service, is
offering new subscribers a PC for $299.99--as long as they
sign up for at least a year of AOL dial-up service at $23.90
per month. Broadband customers can sign up for the
$24.95/month AOL BYOA (Bring Your Own Access) plan, which
includes unlimited access to AOL for Broadband features and
unlimited dial-up access. (The high-speed connection must be
procured from another provider.) More is available here:

Mini Could Get Mighty with Speakers

iPod mini users might want to consider ditching their
earphones if Altec Lansing's iMmini speaker system lives up
to its promise. Based on the same technology and engineering
as the original inMotion system, the iMmini can be folded
into a convenient carrying shape. Altec Lansing says the
10-ounce, 4.4 x 7.0 x 1.0 (HWD) inch speaker system delivers
crystal-clear sound and quality bass. The system accepts an
iPod mini in its built-in dock and can play your MP3s for 24
hours with four AA batteries, according to the company. Find

NEC Shows Off TV and Credit-Card Phones

NEC is a big name in cell phones in Asia, but it's relatively
little-known here. That's about to change: In October, the
company will release two GSM handsets in the U.S. NEC stopped
by our labs to show off its upcoming offerings, acquaint us
further with NEC America, and give us some firsthand
experience with two really cool phones that are available
only in Asia and Japan. We'll probably never see them in the
U.S., but you're welcome to join us as we wallow in phone-envy.
Take a look at our slide show here:
