WEEK IN REVIEW
=========================================================
1. Where Tech Could Bubble Next Year
>From Business Week (Topic: Future Tech), Aug. 23:
It seems techdom offers little to get excited about these
days. Microsoft's next Windows operating system isn't due
until sometime in 2006. The next generation of video-game
boxes won't be out until late 2005, at the earliest. And
even the once-reliable corporate software industry dominated
by the likes of Oracle is stuck in a consolidation mode for
the first time since, well, the corporate software industry
began.

2. Companies Refuse to Discuss Flaws in Touchscreens
>From MSNBC.com (Topic: E-voting), Aug. 23:
The three companies that certify the nation's voting
technologies operate in secrecy, and refuse to discuss flaws
in the ATM-like machines to be used by nearly one in three
voters in November.

3. Google Yields More Than Fistful of Dollars
>From The Washington Post (Topic: Google), Aug. 23:
(Registration Required)
Ah, the burden of riches. All those lucky investors who
bought into Google's vision had their dreams realized when
the company went public last week, but their dreams of
flashy sports cars and prime real estate are shot through
with worries about how to manage all their newfound wealth.

4. IT Admins Not 'Trusting' SP2 Security
>From eWeek (Topic: Security), Aug. 23:
More than two years after company officials claimed
Microsoft Corp. would emphasize security over features in
all products, the whopping update to the company's Windows
XP operating system is being hit for introducing new
vulnerabilities.

5. Medical Info Close At Hand
>From Forbes (Topic: Healthcare), Aug. 23:
Sometimes the one thing most needed in a medical emergency
is information: information about a patient's medical
history, medications they may be taking, allergies, etc.
Someday there will be an integrated, nationwide electronic
health information system to make all this information
available to doctors when needed. Failing that, there are
steps that individuals can now take to have their medical
information handy in the event of an emergency.

6. Reporting to Work Mid-Flight
>From Wired.com (Topic: Wireless), Aug. 22:
Business travelers will be able to surf the web securely on
long-distance flights by combining services from Boeing and
iPass, the companies plan to announce on Monday.

7. File-Sharing Sites Found Not Liable for Infringement
>From The New York Times (Topic: Peer-to-peer networks), Aug.
20: (Registration Required)
Affirming a lower court decision, a federal appellate court
ruled Thursday that the distributors of software used by
millions of people to exchange music files over the Internet
cannot be held liable for aiding copyright infringement.
