Cisco, EDS Screw Up Huge VOIP Project

They're not happy over at Dow Chemical, and EDS has taken
the fall. The huge systems integrator has been replaced by
IBM--and it looks like Cisco's on the ropes as well. What
went wrong with the multinational VOIP integration project?
Was it Cisco's fault? Our VOIP editor pierces the cone of
silence that's descended on this snafu to come up with some
answers. If you're considering VOIP, you must read about
this horror show first--and our VOIP coverage continues with
a look at how small businesses are the industry's next
target, which might not be the best idea.

Many Find SP2's Security Untrustworthy

It's bad news for corporate users and Microsoft alike. After
making security job No. 1 and toiling for more than a year
on the SP2 version of Windows XP, it may all have been for
naught. Many IT execs at large companies still find XP SP2's
security capability disappointing--and over the weekend, yet
another SP2 flaw emerged that could give hackers carte
blanche to your computer. Plus, where's the security service
pack for Windows 2000--that's what our eWEEK lab director
wants to know!

IT Execs Don't Trust SP2:

The Worm Has Turned

Or so HP hopes. The company is using wormlike techniques to
deliver security updates across a network. It's an
interesting way to scan and apply patches. Our security
editor takes a look at HP's innovative techniques and comes
away bearing a message of caution. Used judiciously, perhaps
the worm can be a force for good, instead of evil. Our story
details how the new software works and looks at HP's other
artificial-life initiatives.

Cheap Chips

Intel just slashed prices on a significant portion of its
Pentium 4 CPUs. It's not an uncommon occurrence--the chip
giant typically drops prices to move inventory and make way
for new items. But the drops are pretty massive. For details
on how much, and which products, check our story. Now just
might be the best time this year to build yourself a new
computer--and we'll likely see PC prices fall in a week or
two as well.

Dvorak Picks Worst Software

It's a trend for John--dump on the worst products of the
past for fun and profit. This week, he's trashing software.
His Top 10 list includes some real stinkers, including
Microsoft's "social interface," the first version of
Windows, and a number of other blasts from the past. Check
'em all out, plus John's other rant--on why Microsoft Word
should die!

Do You Need Expensive RAM?

PC memory has gotten more and more expensive, as vendors
keep reducing latency. Sure, that sounds good, but is it
really worth it? Can you buy older and less-latent RAM
safely? And what exactly are you buying? ExtremeTech took a
close look at whether latency matters. Their results will
surprise you--and if you're buying more memory or building a
PC, don't miss the analysis.

How Is CRM Faring?

It's been a disappointment, according to our recent
research. Even though almost two-thirds of companies have
put CRM in, many still think it's terrible. A third of the
companies putting it in have run into significant delays;
almost half say it deserves the bad press; and many agree
that things must change for this product category to thrive.
If you're looking to add CRM or to address the problems
you've seen, don't miss our exclusive research results.
It'll surprise you!
