Beyond The News -- A Daily Commentary From Salem Communications August 25, 2004
Disputed Recollections, or Something More? --Michael Medved In the midst of their indignation over charges about John Kerry's Vietnam record, his supporters won't confront a fundamental question: what if the Swift Boat Veterans are right, and Senator Kerry is actually wrong, in some of their disputed recollections? On one point of contention the Kerry camp has already conceded the senator made inaccurate statements: despite his repeated and very detailed accounts of his "Christmas in Cambodia" in 1968, he definitely wasn't there at the time. If he's similarly wrong or dishonest on other claims, doesn't it call his character into question? Dozens of eyewitnesses--all of them honored combat veterans--emphatically contradict his accounts, and the fact that the left today won't face these issues demonstrates how they never really cared about Kerry's Vietnam record. And why should they--to liberals, the Vietnam War was an evil disaster, so their whole obsession with Kerry's purported battlefield heroism was always a sham based on political expediency.
