August 26, 2004 on this day: In 1909 Swiss paleontologist Otto Hauser discovered a near complete skeleton of a cro-magnon man in a rock deposit in France. Although this was not the first set of proto-human remains to be found, it was the first to be largely intact, and is considered a key discovery in the field of paleontology. Cro-magons are believed to have lived between 45,000 and 10,000 years ago, and were nearly identical to modern humans. They possessed language and complex social structures. They also had an interest in art and are believed to have even created the first calendar. They differed from modern humans by being slightly larger, and by having slightly larger brains.
