Breast Milk Doesn't Help Very Small Newborns
Feeding very low birth-weight infants with mother's milk rather than
formula doesn't seem to improve their neurological development,
researchers have found.
In a study published in the Journal of Development and Behavioral
Pediatrics, Dr. Lydia Furman and colleagues from Case Western Reserve
University in Cleveland, Ohio, examined the effect of maternal milk
feeding during the first four weeks of life on the neurodevelopmental
outcome of 98 very low birth-weight infants at the age 20 months.

Exposure to fumes emitted by cleaning products in the home could cause
asthma in children, a study published Thursday shows.
The study, in the British Medical Association's journal Thorax, found that
children exposed to higher levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
were four times more likely to suffer from asthma than children who were
not.

Researchers Put Gingko On Trial For Treatment Of Dementia
Researchers in London are to explore the effectiveness of gingko, a
complementary medicine traditionally used to treat circulatory problems,
as a treatment for early dementia. The study of 250 patients aged over 55
will seek to find out whether GPs can help patients by prescribing the
supplement to those with memory loss, one of the early symptoms of
dementia. It will be the first to test gingko as a treatment for those
who are still living in the community and are being treated by their GP.
Previous trials have concentrated on patients receiving hospital care,
where the condition is often more advanced.

Sheep have shown researchers why stressed-out people are comforted by the
sight of a friendly face. Scientists at the Babraham Institute in the
eastern English city of Cambridge discovered that when sheep were

*** HEALTH/SAFETY TIPS & ARTICLES FOR THE WEEK ***

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME 116 patients diagnosed with Irritable Bowel
Syndrome (IBS) took part in a study to determine the effectiveness of a
Chinese herbal formulation as a treatment for this condition. Participants
received one of three types of treatments; individualized Chinese herbal
treatment, a standard Chinese herbal treatment, or a placebo. This was a
randomized, double-blind controlled study. During the course of treatment,
the Bowel Symptom Scale was used to monitor changes in condition and
measure the severity of the IBS symptoms.
Approximately 20 percent of the United States population suffer from this
disorder. Although it is common, there has been no effective treatment
available. Recently, with attention directed towards this Chinese herbal
formulation, there is significant hope for both pain and symptom
management.

AROMATHERAPY FOR DOGS The use of natures most concentrated botanical
substances- essential oils, is an excellent way to calm dogs who are
fearful, agitated and hyperactive. The very nature of these substances is
such that they work quickly and do not leave the animal in a drugged or
listless state, as common tranquilizers such as Valium do. Unlike herbal
calming tablets, which take time to digest, aromatherapy essential oils
are inhaled and quickly begin their work.

REFLEXOLOGY - In the December 1993 issue of the prestigious American
Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology a research paper presented by
William Flocco and Dr. Terry Oleson showed reflexology reduced women's
P.M.S. symptoms by 46 per cent for the eight weeks of weekly treatments.
This was sustained with 42 per cent reduction of symptoms for eight weeks
after treatment. It was not as effective as drug treatments. However,
reflexology had none of the side effects of drugs. The conclusion was that
reflexology should be considered an effective therapy for PMS. This is the
first scientifically accepted reflexology research study conducted in
North America.

*** BOOK REVIEW: Women and Autoimmune Disease : The Mysterious Ways Your
Body Betrays Itself -by Robert G. Lahita, Ina Yalof
----------

Lahita, a doctor who wrote the textbook on autoimmune disease for medical
professionals, as well as a layperson's book on rheumatoid arthritis ,
concentrates here on how autoimmune diseases afflict women, who make up
75% of cases nationwide. A healthy immune system defends the body from
antigens such as viruses and bacteria. But sometimes the immune system
erroneously attacks healthy cells, leading to autoimmune diseases, such as
lupus, multiple sclerosis and vasculitis. Lahita, aided by medical writer
Yalof, draws on research and case studies to identify 16 conditions that
have been categorized as autoimmune diseases (he includes chronic fatigue
syndrome, though its cause remains uncertain) and describes at length the
symptoms, causes and possible treatments for these debilitating ailments.
Treatment is complicated, according to Lahita, since patients are often
diagnosed too late because their complex symptoms mimic those of other
conditions. A patient with vasculitis, for example, was first thought to
have meningitis. This clearly written text should be extremely useful to
people with these difficult ailments, their families and caregivers.
Lahita, however, is suspicious of alternative herbal or homeopathic
therapies, which he says have not been scientifically found to be
effective.
