1. News: Users Unsure about Oracle's Patch Plan

SHARE attendees last week said that, judging from their
experiences with Microsoft's patch delivery schedule, the
monthly patch roll-up Oracle has in the works would be
fine--unless a patch is particularly deadly, that is.

1. News: Security Software Firm Concocts Oracle Database
Firewall

Next Generation Security Software, the company that found
more than 30 Oracle vulnerabilities that were reported to
Oracle in the winter, is coming out with a firewall to
protect the company's very widespread database. The firewall
will serve as an intrusion prevention system.

Oracle's planning to issue its first patch roll-up on Aug.

2. News: Oracle Procurement System Stalls at Ford Motor

The automobile company has been tinkering with Everest, a
procurement system based on Oracle 11i e-commerce software,
for some five years. It's now decided to reverse gears and
push suppliers back to its original system, although it's
not backing away from all Oracle technology. Find out why.

3. News: ACLU Asks Retailers to Snub Feds' Requests for
Customer Data

The American Civil Liberties Union has launched a "no-spy
pledge" campaign in which it's asking companies such as CVS,
The Home Depot and Thrifty to decline government requests
for customers' personal data unless required by law to do
so.

4. News: Mayo to Use Data Mining to Paint Genomic and Personal
Portrait of Patients

Mayo Clinic hooked up with IBM to build a data repository
that will house a massive collection of medical records from
some 4.4 million patients. Using IBM's Blue Gene
supercomputer, Mayo hopes to improve patient care by linking
genomic profiles, personal history and other data, not to
mention helping to fuel its disease research with, for
example, special algorithms for molecular modeling.

5. Opinion: What Grid Computing Practitioners Should Have
Learned from Last Summer's Blackout

One of the most important lessons that grid computing
proponents should have come away from last year is that they
must imagine complex disruptions along with the simple and
obvious failures, writes eWEEK Technology Editor Peter
Coffee. The challenge is greater, of course, since computer
cycle times are shorter and the compute cycle shared is more
complex than that encountered in power plants. What happened
and how can we avoid it next time?
