CHARLOTTE OKS 90-ACRE SITE FOR VILLAGE OF FEMA TRAILERS
Hundreds of FEMA trailers targeted for desperate Charlotte County residents will be
set up on 90 acres near the Charlotte County Airport, officials said Thursday. The
Charlotte County Commission approved Thursday turning a county-owned tract between
Interstate 75 and the Charlotte County Jail to the east into a village for displaced
residents, said Wayne Sallade, the countys emergency management director.

MASSIVE CLEANUP EFFORTS FROM CHARLEY CONTINUING
In what some Southwest Floridians once used to call home, chunks of twisted metal,
splintering lumber and molding furniture now make up for the millions of cubic yards
of storm-related waste being collected in several counties. In Charlotte County alone,
Ash Britt, a company hired to collect storm-related waste, has collected about 300,000
cubic yards of debris since Hurricane Charlie hit two weeks ago.

AC/DC SINGER, BASSIST TO LEAD RED CROSS BENEFIT EVENT
In the days after Hurricane Charley, Germain Arena served as home to those displaced
by the storm. On Sept. 10, the arena will give back more much-needed relief. Members
of the seminal hard-rock band AC/DC and a former lead singer of Bad Company will
headline a benefit concert that could bring in more than $100,000 for the American Red
Cross and its efforts to help replace the things Charley blew away.

STUDY: RECREATIONAL FISHERS HAVE GREATER IMPACT ON FISH COUNTS
Long considered of negligible impact, U.S. recreational fishers may be responsible for
landing nearly 25 percent of overfished salt water species, a Florida State University
study released Thursday suggests. Citing federal data from the South Atlantic, Gulf of
Mexico and the U.S. Pacific Coast, researchers say the impact of 10 million U.S.
recreational anglers is far more significant than previously thought. Leading
commercial fishing opponents, however, called the studys conclusion ludicrous.

IN PERSPECTIVE:
DAN K. THOMASSON: THE BUCK STOPS AT THE TOP
>From the outset it has been obvious that the responsibility for the Abu Ghraib prison
>scandal was not solely that of a handful of sadistic, misguided guards. If Harry
>Trumans oft-quoted admonition about where the buck stops has any relevance, then
>those up and down the chain of command also have to be held accountable to one degree
>or another. At the very least, they created an atmosphere in which brutalizing the
>enemy was acceptable.

IN FLORIDA
RESPONSE TO CHARLEY VERSUS ANDREW IS LIKE NIGHT AND DAY
Betty Babitzke and her husband were so frustrated after struggling through Hurricane
Andrews aftermath that they quickly decided they would leave South Florida. I
plotted all the storms and all the charts of the hurricanes. I thought Its been 44
years since Donna, she said, adding that since Hurricane Donna hit southwest
Florida, storms entering the Gulf of Mexico seemed to either skirt the Florida Keys
and speed toward the Panhandle or drifted toward Mobile, Ala., and further west.

IN NEAPOLITAN:
DEJA VIEW ALL OVER AGAIN FOR FALL NETWORK TELEVISION
Broadcast networks are in big trouble this season if federal regulators add being
derivative to the list of TV trespasses. Networks are copying their own series,
sometimes with a third or fourth edition (CSI, Law & Order) or putting on shows
that have the whiff of copycat about them (The Contender vs. The Next Great
Champ). Television is used to milking ideas for all theyre worth, but the trend is
nearly overwhelming in the 2004-05 season nearly, but not quite.
