A Healthy Blow to Big Media
--Hugh Hewitt

While the particulars of the struggle between John Kerry and the Swift Boat Vets
change daily, it is clear that Senator Kerry has suffered enormous damage as a result
of his tales of Cambodian secret missions.

One cannot predict where the story will settle, but one can state conclusively that
the new media of talk radio, the Internet and bloggers have pushed this story to the
front despite the outright hostility of the big papers and old networks.

The major newsrooms in the country tilt in a very pro-Kerry direction, leading them to
ignore the allegations of the swift vets when they first surfaced. But radio
personalities and Internet bloggers did the research and quickly caught John Kerry in
enormous exaggerations concerning how he spent Christmas Eve in 1968 as well as other
details of his Vietnam service. Eventually, even the most obedient of the big papers
favoring Kerry had to concede that the issue needed coverage.

The day when big media could decide the news cycle is now officially over, and that is
a very good thing indeed.
