Set Goals for Your Next 12 Months

I was really bad at this when I first started my business.
And I've come to find out that MOST of my customers are
making big mistakes in this area as well.

You have to set goals for your online business. If you don't
know where you're going, then how do you ever plan to get there.

And for most people, they simply say they want to make good
money and quit their job. That's not enough. Be more specific.
What would you like your life to be like one year from now?
How about 5 years from now? How about 20 years?

Where would you like to live? How much do you want to earn each
year? How would you like to spend your time?

Do you want to travel...or stay home? Do you want more time
to spend going to your kid's Little League games? Would you
like to pay off your current home...or move to a nicer one?
Would you like to work mornings so you can spend your afternoons
at the golf course?

What kind of car do you want to drive? How much do you plan to
save each year? How much is in your bank account? How much do you
give away to good works?

In other words...paint a specific picture for your life.

For your budding business...let's focus on your next 12 months.
You should go further into the future to see your eventual goals
first. Then, once you have figured that out, back up to 12 months
from now.

What is life going to be like 12 months from now?
Sure, it won't be as grand as your eventual goals. And it probably
won't include you being a multi-millionaire yet. But if you create
a successful Internet business it can be quite a bit different
from the lifestyle you're living today.

Planning an Internet business for the next 20 years is next to
impossible. The Internet changes at warp speed...and you have no
idea what the Internet will even look like 5 years from now.
So the easiest way to focus is to concentrate only on the next 12
months for your Internet business.

How would you like to be living 12 months from now?

Plan Your Monthly, Weekly and Daily Actions to Reach Your Goals

Having a set of goals won't do you an ounce of good if you don't
come up with a practical plan for reaching those goals. This is
where many people turn their backs on "self-help" authors.
You can have incredible goals, but if you don't take daily steps
toward them, then you'll never realize them.

Let's say for example that one of your goals is to earn a certain
net profit per month from your Internet business 12 months from now.
If expenses such as affiliate commissions, hosting, advertising,
product delivery, etc. take up half your income, then you're really
looking at having to make double that per month in gross profit.

Earning $5,000 a month in net profit 12 months from now is not
that big of a goal at all. If you put in a little time each
day you shouldn't have much trouble reaching that point in 12
months. In fact, if you were to work hard, you should be able to
get there a whole lot faster...or be earning a lot more money in
this time frame.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Now we need to take that goal and figure out what steps you need
to take to get there. What do you need to accomplish each month
for the next twelve months to reach that goal?
----------------------------------------------------------------
If you're starting from scratch and want to focus on an information
business, then your plan may look something like the below:

Month One: Study potential niche markets.
Find frustrations and wants not being fulfilled in the marketplace.
Find out what the market's hot buttons are (the things that make
them buy one product over another).

Month Two: Decide on a product.
Create a web site and work on the rough draft of a sales letter
for your soon-to-be product. Start building a list of prospects
in your chosen market.

Month Three: Create your first product
(usually an e-book or audio tape) and finish up the sales material
for it. Make sure to refer people to affiliate links throughout.
Sell it to your prospect list you've been building for the
last month. Earn $200 net profit.

Month Four: Test PPC search engine advertising & ezine advertising
extensively for your new product offer. Write several articles for
submission to ezines. See if you can increase the conversion rates
with a different headline, price, or bonus. Earn $300 net profit.

Month Five: Start an affiliate program.
Create banners, solo ads, classified ads, endorsements, etc.
Provide all the tools your new affiliates will need to promote
the program. Earn $500 net profit.

Month Six: Spend the month looking for top affiliates,
ezine publishers, and e-book authors. Offer them increased
commissions to be part of your program. Earn at least $1,000 net
profit this month from their endorsements.

Month Seven: Continue the process of looking for top affiliates
this month. Your goal is to make bigger deals and get in larger
publications. Earn $2,000 net profit this month.

Month Eight: Start working on your first backend product.
You should have begun to receive feedback on this product.
Look through emails you've received and find other frustrations
your customers are coming up against. Use this material for your
second product. Continue to earn $2,000 net profit from your
first product.

Month Nine: Keep promoting your first product and finding
new affiliates. At the same time complete your new product
and sales piece. Your goal is to be able to earn the same
income of $2,000 net profit even though your attention is
on a new product.

Month Ten: Offer this second product to your prospect and
customer list. Plug it into your current affiliate program.
Send out emails to all of your affiliates to promote this
product also. Your goal is $5,000 in net profit this month
from the two products.

Month Eleven: Prepare a complete email follow-up system
for both products. Have any customer who buys one immediately
start receiving information on the other one. Start testing
advanced forms of marketing such as banners, co-registrations,
postcards, etc. Your goal this month is $3,000 in net profit
because of increased ad expenses...BUT to find another
completed automated advertising income source.

Month Twelve: Continue all of the working advertising
such as ezines, PPC search engines, and anything else proven
to work. Continually motivate your affiliates.
Start planning for your third related product in this market.
Your goal is $5,000 net profit from mostly automated sources.

The Next Step is to Break Up Your Plan Into Daily Tasks
-------------------------------------------------------
As you can see from the above, this is not a complete diary
or plan for you. It is a basic outline of a 12 month goal.
Then what you would do is break up the months and separate
them up into weekly goals. What do you want to accomplish
each week in your online business to reach your monthly goals?

Once you have weekly goals, then break them up into short
daily tasks you need to accomplish each day to reach your goals.

I've proven it to myself again and again. Even though I know
how to make good money using Internet marketing for any product
or service, I will still accomplish at least twice as much each
week when I've written down my goals.

I even break my weekly goals down into daily tasks.
Then I examine how much I've accomplished at the end of each
day to prepare a quick task list for the next day. This
definitely wouldn't be considered advanced time management
by any means. It's just a simple way I do things for maximum
effectiveness in my business...and it causes many people to
ask how I can accomplish so much in the little amount of time I work.

Whenever I don't plan like the above, I end up wasting too much
precious time checking emails 10 times a day or reading unimportant
web sites. I'll lose 2 to 3 hours without even noticing when I'm
not focused in my daily plans.
--------------------------------------------------------
Caution: Most people will overestimate how much they can
accomplish in a week, and underestimate how much they'll
accomplish in a year. I've had a lot of people tell me
they have to make $10,000 by next week.
--------------------------------------------------------
When I ask about assets, they don't have a product, a web site,
a list, or any relationships with people who do have those
things. If you have an irresistible product and sales letter,
then you could potentially do it through a relationship with a
list owner. If you own an email list, then it's easy to create
that kind of overnight money with the right product.

If you have strong relationships with other marketers, then
you could combine list owners with product owners and do it
without any hard asset. The only problem is that these
relationships take time to build...and the biggest windfall
profits almost always occur once you've proven yourself to
these people time and time again.

Yet some people actually believe they can earn $10,000 with
a few hours or work...with no contacts or assets...and no
experience whatsoever. If it was that easy, everybody would
be doing it.

Yet those same people have trouble believing a plan like the
one I laid out above. They're so busy looking for the quick
buck that they can't see long-term residual income from taking
the right steps. They don't believe they can do everything above!

Well, guess what? You can do it...if you break up your large
plan and goals into smaller monthly, weekly, and daily tasks.
Even if you only have a few hours a week to work, you can still
do the above. You can still follow the plan.

Just plan a couple of little tasks to accomplish each day.
Then force yourself to do them regardless of how you feel
that day. Just do it every day...and within 12 months you
could own your own automatic Internet money machine.
