FARMWORKERS WINCE AT PROSPECT OF PENDING JOB CRISIS
Each day that more of their not-yet orange paychecks tumble to the ground, fear mounts
for thousands of citrus workers. Struggling to rebuild hurricane-torn mobile homes,
many of Floridas farmworkers face the stark reality of not getting work this season.
Hurricane Charley wiped out an estimated 20 percent, or $150 million, of the states
citrus crop with DeSoto and Hardee counties among the hardest hit.

PROPERTY TAX NOTICES WONT REFLECT STORMS DAMAGE
When Hurricane Charley swept through Florida, no one was thinking about their property
tax bill. But only a couple of weeks after Charley caused billions of dollars in
damage, property appraisers have no choice but to mail out property tax bills to homes
that were severely damaged or destroyed in the hurricane. Those bills dont factor in
the hurricane because under Florida law all properties are assessed for their value as
of January 2004.

GOSS CRITICIZED OVER 1999 FEDERAL FLOOD INSURANCE BILL
With a one-page bill U.S. Rep. Porter Goss sponsored in 1999, he opened the door for
residents of North Captiva to get federally subsidized flood insurance and have
taxpayers pay for damages from storm surge on the barrier island. About 200 acres of
the island had been included under a program begun in 1982 that prohibited certain
barrier islands and parts of barrier islands from being covered by taxpayer-supported
national flood insurance.

SATURDAY NIGHT FIRE DESTROYS NAPLES MEXICAN RESTAURANT
Fire destroyed The Hammock Mexican Cantina in Naples late Saturday night and flames
shot more than 20 feet into the air, sending a plume of thick, black smoke drifting
over parts of downtown. The cause of the fire, which broke out just before 9 p.m., at
the Mexican restaurant off Goodlette-Frank Road, near Grand Central Station, was not
immediately known. Naples police reported no injuries at press time.

IN PERSPECTIVE:
PHIL LEWIS: CHARLEY READ ALL ABOUT IT, AND LEARN
The images wrought by Hurricane Charley burn like a branding iron. A drive up
Interstate 75 through Charlotte County reveals more than any of us would desire to
see. You dont even have to get off the main highway to be startled. For me the most
amazing and haunting image was that of long, silver highway light poles felled by
the storm. Dozens were limply drapped along the road as if a giant blow torch was used
to heat and soften them into curious shapes.

IN FLORIDA
UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS FACE HURDLES AFTER STORM
Angel Lopez examined a blue flier that read in English and Spanish, Disaster
Assistance is Available Now, but discarded it as soon as Federal Emergency Management
Agency workers moved on to another house in this neighborhood of migrant farmworkers.
Lopez had no intention of applying for federal assistance even though Hurricane
Charley ripped off part of the roof of the home he rents and damaged his possessions.

IN NEAPOLITAN:
DAUGHTERS SPINAL SURGERY TEACHES LESSONS IN MEDICINE, COURAGE
The day Id dreaded and fought against for five years was upon me. My daughters
surgery day. Even though her life wasnt threatened by her condition, this was major
back surgery, and if anything went wrong, her quality of life hung in the balance.
Were we doing the right thing? The biggest risk was that she would come out of the
surgery paralyzed for life. On the other hand, a successful surgery would mean her
back problem, an S curve of the spine called scoliosis, would be corrected so it
wouldnt cause her greater problems such as decreased lung function as she grew into
adulthood.
