John Kerry as a shift-in-the-wind campaigner unworthy of the White House on Monday, opening their national convention four miles from Ground Zero of America's worst terrorist attack. "We need George Bush more than ever," said former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. "We need a leader with the experience to make the tough decisions and the resolve to stick with them," added Arizona Sen. John McCain on a night that repeatedly stirred painful memories of the terrorist strike - and the president's response to the defining moment of his term. HURRICANE 2004: MARCO OFFICIALS REVIEW HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS Tops on Marco Island's list for better hurricane preparedness: better communications. During a two-hour seminar Monday night, Marco City Council addressed how the city handled Hurricane Charley and how it will prepare for upcoming storms. City Manager Bill Moss reported on the city's strengths and weaknesses in five broad categories, including pre-storm planning, communications, the course of action during the storm, debris management and equipment. ELECTION 2004: ELECTION OFFICIALS EXPECTING SKIMPY VOTER TURNOUT Today's ballot will be skimpy for those who have chosen no political party in Collier County. Of nearly 15,000 absentee ballots that voters requested for the primary, about half were back as of Monday morning, said Pat Pochopin, assistant supervisor of elections for Collier County. HURRICANE 2004: LOCALS KEEPING A CLOSE EYE ON FRANCES With residents still cleaning up after Hurricane Charley's visit more than two weeks ago, emergency management officials and weather forecasters are keeping a close eye on Charley's big sister, Hurricane Frances, which strengthened into a Category 3 hurricane as it pushed closer through the northern Caribbean Sea on Monday. With 125-mph winds, Frances is not expected to crash into Florida, still reeling from Hurricane Charley on Aug. 13. The man talks construction safety all over Southwest Florida, and after Hurricane Charley came up Charlotte Harbor, he had proof that what he preaches is true. Kelley owns Safe-Site Inc., a Lee County company that teaches construction safety. Its sister company, Safenet, designed and sells a netting system that prevents workers from falling out of window and wall openings on construction sites.
