Measuring Your Success, BenchMark, Your Dream List

This week, we're going to explore some very important points
of reference: where we are, where we want to go and whom we
want to become.
Where Are You N�w?
Let's say you decided to visit me but had nev�r been to
Burlington, Vermont. If you were to call me to ask directions
to where I live, what's the first thing I would ask you?
Of course, I would ask you where you are n�w. I couldn't begin
to provide directions unless I first knew your starting point.
In order to get anywhere we intend to go, we must know where
we are.
We have a special gift for you. It's called BenchMark and you

BenchMark is a personal inventory--an honest analysis of
where you are at this point in time. This is a difficult
step for many people to make because it forces them to
face the reality of their circumstances. They think it's
worse than it is; and that might be so. But the way out
of any place is an honest and accurate assessment of our
present situation.
BenchMark will help you gain a clear sense of your current
position so you can navigate to your preferred destination.
And it will help you do it in all areas of your life.
Where Do You Want to Go and Whom Do You Want to Become?
In order to gain clarity about what you truly want out
of life, it's important to dream a little--perhaps a lot.
My suggestion is that you start a Dream List. It's a wish
list of places you want to go, things you want to do, traits
you want to develop, things you want to learn--in short,
everything you've ever dreamed about.
This is not a time to be 'practical.' This is not a time to
judge whether or not you could or 'should' want these things.
This is a time to dream, to let the creative juices flow.
For many of you, this will not be easy. You may find yourself
slowing down at 10 or 20 or 50 items. The idea is to write down
as many as you can. Think of things to be, do, have, experience,
learn, taste, overcome, give, see, etc.
Spend at least 15 minutes the first session and keep your list
handy to add to it as you think of things later. Stay in the
mode of dreaming and resist the tendency to edit and judge.
There is nothing wrong with wanting these things.
These are not really goals, but they may be precursors to some
of your goals, which we will work with next week.
