That group has made a huge difference in keeping me involved with the camp and the people through service projects and fundraising. Cynthia Dowding of Old Bridge, New Jersey, wrote in with a story of the organization that made such a difference in her life that she calls it her hero. Her hero group has helped her through so much that it's easy to call them all heroes. Here's what she had to write. Today's Hero: The hero in my life is not a person, but an organization. I was widowed in 1992 and paralyzed in a car accident in 1995. I was 45 years old. In 2000, because of a doctor's mistake, I was forced to go into a nursing home. I lost my home because the money for the sale of it had to go to the state. It broke my heart because my husband and I worked so hard for it. I spent 18 miserable months there until my sister found out about a house that was built by Catholic Charities that was a home for 8 handicapped adults. She put my name in, and I was chosen to live there. It changed my whole life. I went from being an unhappy, burden of the state to a self-sufficient person who pays rent and utilities. I live in a beautiful house that is handicapped accessible, I am free to work or volunteer, and my life is my own. We share the cooking, shopping and light cleaning. We can come and go as we please, and it gave us all a new lease on life because most of us came from nursing homes where we did not belong. Catholic Charities has over 100 programs that help people of all religions. Most of the people they help are not Catholic. In my house, which is called the "Community House of St. Thomas," I am the only Catholic. So, Catholic Charities is my hero, because it took me from a life of despair to a life of hope. All I could ask, if you have one in your community, is to donate to them if you can afford to because of all the good works that they do. The best thing we can be is the hero of another.
