Bridging the "Great Divide"
--Michael Medved

A heavily-hyped new book charges that the smart, productive American majority has been
subjugated by a superstitious minority, hopelessly rooted in the past.

The authors of "The Great Divide" see the U.S. as two countries--one "Metro," the
other "Retro." Metro America is supposed to be the East and West Coasts and the Upper
Great Lakes, while Retro America is the South, Plains States and the Mountain West.

The authors say Metro America "is science and technology" and "more educated," while
Retro America is "the Bible Belt" that "turns from science." But their analysis falls
apart with one statistic the authors acknowledge: in Retro America, 60 percent see the
Bible as the literal word of God, but in supposedly hip Metro America, a surprising 44
percent agree with that proposition.

Religious faith keeps leftist ideology from dominating the country-- and that faith
flourishes even in the midst of supposedly "enlightened" Metro states that secularists
claim as their own.
