Microsoft Emasculates Longhorn to Hit 2006 Ship Date
You would think I'd be eating some pretty humble pie right
now. Back in February, I was the first to predict that
Windows Longhorn wouldn't ship until 2008--and now that
Microsoft claims 2006 is a drop-dead date, I must look
pretty silly, right? WRONG. That "thing" that's coming out
in 2006 isn't close to what Longhorn was supposed to be. And
it appears that the promised Longhorn won't be
feature-complete until 2010 or so. So, I was optimistic. So
there. Anyway, our coverage has led the world, far and away.
We've got details on what Microsoft chucked overboard to
make a 2006 deadline, the memo that Windows head honcho Jim
Allchin sent to the entire staff, and how the developer
community is reacting to the new Longhorn Lite. And if you
think all that is bad enough, check out David Coursey's
Weblog, where he sees a repeat of Microsoft's worst
operating system since Windows 1.0 (can you say ME?) And our
Linux insider sees this as a golden opportunity for the
Penguin!

It's the New, New Novell!
Back in the late '80s, the guy responsible for Windows at
Microsoft, Brian Valentine, was a proselytizing preacher for
the company's NOS LAN Manager. He'd go mano-a-mano at
industry conferences with Novell's best and brightest, often
walking away with at least a TKO. Now, Valentine seems to be
in hot water due to Longhorn's delays, but Novell surely
ended up worse for the wear. Forget Network Operating
Systems, it's all about Linux and identity management--at
least that's how it appears from here. For details on the
reorg and what it means, check out our story. And for
insight into why Novell just might rise again--at the
expense of Microsoft--check out what our Linux Watcher
thinks of these two top stories.

New Robotic Vacuum Sucks
In a good way, I promise. The new Roomba from iRobot really
does a good job cleaning your house, according to our robot
expert. He put it to the test, and the new
features--including better battery and smarter room
mapping--make it the best of the bunch. It even uses sound
to find and inhale especially concentrated dirt. Our review
and slideshow detail why you may never vacuum again!

I'm Mad as Heck and I'm Not Going to Take It Anymore
When the new HDTV Wonder from ATI came into my life, I was
overjoyed. I spent the whole weekend two weeks ago building
a computer around it, just so I could experience the joys of
time-shifting this season's HD broadcasts of the Patriots
(and other football games). But it took me a week of burning
the midnight tweaker's oil before I could get the darn thing
to work right. No one should have to go through that kind of
Hades! Our prior review of the HDTV "Blunder" was far too
kind, so I prevailed upon TPTB to lower the score--this card
is not ready for prime time. For details on why I'm so mad,
and why the card is so bad, read my rant. And check out the
original review for what it's supposed to do.

Voom Me, Baby
Speaking of HDTV, we just recently installed a VOOM
satellite system in our HDTV lab here in San Francisco.
We've all been entranced by the wonderful content--oodles of
HDTV channels for your viewing pleasure. Could this be the
perfect TV service to complement that new widescreen TV?
Perhaps, but better read our review first. It's not perfect,
not by a longshot. But it sure is cool!

A Neat Verizon Picture Phone
I carried around the LG 6000 for a while and found it to be
a sweet, serviceable and affordable picture phone. Now, LG
has released a follow-on, the VX7000, and our reviewer felt
the same way. This phone won't cost an arm and a leg, but
it's packed with great features wrapped in an easy-to-use
interface. If you're looking for a phone with features but
without a high price tag, this one could be for you! Our
review has the deets. And if you're looking for a phone with
a keyboard that'll double as a PDA, we've got the goods for
you, too, as we round up the three latest QWERTY phones.
