Today's Macintosh Tip: Recovering Deleted Items Sometimes when you think you've thrown something away, it's not really gone. For instance, if you throw away a locked document, the Finder will inform you that it can't be deleted. If you throw things into the Trash, they remain there until the Trash is emptied, you launch an application, or you shut down the computer. Even if you do empty the Trash and later discover there was a document you accidentally deleted you can sometimes get it back. When you've discovered that's happened, don't save any new files on the disk where the document was. Get a hold of a disk recovery utility (MacTools Deluxe or Norton Utilities for the Macintosh are two examples). These programs are capable of reconstructing deleted files so they are once again usable. Success is based on whether or not the area on the disk has been written over since the file was deleted. 2.
