Chihao Wu, a student at Lewis-Clark State College, tried to woo his girlfriend by arranging rolled-up clothes, doused in lamp oil, in a parking lot to spell "Happy Birthday " in his native language. He then brought his girlfriend to the site to reveal his fiery display. Police and fire officials had to be called and arrived to find Wu stomping on the still-burning clothing. The flames were finally put out when the fire department used an extinguisher. According to Wu, there is no tradition of such displays in his country, but he was merely trying "to show devotion to the female."
