While about 76% of all children do have immunizations up to date, the presence of children without proper immunizations means they can carry diseases and transfer them or versions of them to those with immunizations. Some children fall behind in their vaccine schedule because parents think kids cannot get vaccines when they are sick. Other children are not adequately vaccinated because their parents think no one gets sick from these diseases anymore, worry that these vaccines are dangerous, or feel they cannot afford the vaccines. In fact, these things are not true. Be sure to check with your child's doctor to see that your child is up to date with immunizations, including diphtheria/tetanus/pertussis, pneumococcus, varicella (chicken pox), polio, Hemophilus influenza (Hib), hepatitis B and MMR. It is fine for children to get shots even if they have a cold, an upset stomach or a slight fever. Your child should still develop the right amount of protection. On rare occasions when your child has a more serious illness, the doctor may recommend that you wait a few days to a week before getting any vaccines. Free vaccines are available. Children should never be missing vaccines because of money concerns. Many health care providers take part in the federal Vaccines for Children (VFC) program that provides free vaccines for children who don't have insurance as well as children covered by Medicaid and children's health insurance programs. Most communities also have public health clinics where you can go to get these vaccines for free. 3.
