FORGET ABOUT DAN Recent scuba diving accidents involving divers who went missing in currents underscore the risk of drift diving in areas that lack effective missing diver emergency response plans. No matter how much insurance you carry, no matter how many DAN telephone numbers you have, if you are missing at sea and there are no planes and helicopters in the air searching for you, your chances of being found alive are not good. As I stand on this weekâs Soapbox, five boats continue to search for Crystal Divers owner Dan Granier and PADI IDC student Danielle Gibbons. Sadly, there are still no search planes in the air four days after the divers went missing, and it is unlikely they will be found alive. Recently in the Red Sea, 12 divers were rescued after being spotted by aerial search teams. But those search and recovery teams from Almaza Air Base would not take off until the boat owner agreed to make a cash deposit. Fortunately for the divers, the boat operator was financially able and willing to make the payment that saved their lives. Next time you sign on for a drift dive halfway around the world, it might be prudent to confirm that if the boat crew canât find you after you resurface, the boat operatorâs missing diver emergency response plan includes air search and recovery teams that get into the air quickly. And if that means a cash deposit by the dive boat operator, make sure up-front they are willing to make the payment that could save your life. The Victoria is thought to be the only ship wreck in the world that lies in a 90-degree position...
