TV, Our New Addiction
--Michael Medved

Parents have begun to run out of excuses when it comes to cutting back on their
family's TV habits. A startling new study in the prestigious British medical journal
The Lancet shows the amount of television watched as a child is directly linked to the
risk of serious health problems as an adult.

Kids who watch the tube two hours a day or more between ages of 5 and 15 sharply
increase chances of high cholesterol levels, smoking, poor fitness and overweight.
Since average American children watch TV for three hours a day--much more than kids in
the study--this colossal waste of time clearly contributes to alarming statistics
among today's young adults. The international researchers conclude: "Excessive
television viewing in young people is likely to have far-reaching consequences for
adult health."

Parents who pretend that TV is just a harmless indulgence resemble the citizens of
previous decades who convinced themselves that smoking did no serious damage.
