COMMENT: Let There Be Light.
Dear A-Letter Reader:
There is nothing like having the lights go out to clear your mind.
Someone once said it's always darkest just before the lights go on, and
for those of us who make our happy homes in the State of Florida,
electricity was a scarce commodity over the weekend -- in my case, for
over 28 hours. Try and read by candlelight and you'll know why all
those colonial Founding Fathers always had eye glasses perched on the
ends of their noses.
Hurricane Frances gave us far more wind and water than anyone wanted,
or needed and, like an unwelcome guest who wont take the hint, he hung
around far too long.
The frustrating thing about an act of God of this nature (as the
insurance policies call it), is that mere man tries to predict what God
alone knows; the exact path and intensity of a major climactic event.
When all those predictions don't pan out, mass irritation ensues. And
the wall to wall, 24/7 TV and radio coverage (battery operated) only
compounds the growing cabin fever.
But this timeout from modern civilization gave me some time to think
about the future -- about other, non-meteorological predictions and
signs about which you and I must be concerned. I intend to elaborate
on some of these in coming days, but for now, here are a few of my
thoughts, borne in near darkness -- as 60 mph wind and rain tore at the
eves of my storm shuttered abode.
* The day is coming when technology, already available, will diminish
the status of the nation state, if not eventually, abolish it.
* There will be no need to live and suffer in a high tax jurisdictions,
since global mobility will allow us to live and worked where we
please. All jobs will become "offshore jobs."
* Even more cash, assets and wealth will exist in cyberspace, and as
such, the day will come when most funds will be "offshore funds."
* In the meantime, governments will do all they can to block these
inevitable trends, in vain attempts to preserve their control and
collect their confiscatory taxes. Ultimately, they will fail.
* Individuals will become "de-nationalized" in the sense that current
concepts of "citizenship" will be stretched, then broken, as nations
compete for foreign wealth and talented individuals.
What all this means is that you and I must think anew, disenthralling
ourselves from current dogma, much of it already dying or dead. The
last thing you need is to be stuck in a time warp that keeps you from
a successful place in the revolution already underway.
