From security to service provisioning, digital identity is changing the face of today's networks. Security systems are going global, as enterprises increasingly turn to identity management solutions from vendors such as IBM, Netegrity, Novell, and Oblix as a means to better align network policies and permissions with business goals, not just IT's ideas of how a system should be managed. "It's almost a yin and yang." Aside from a possible service charge, the transaction is seamless. It's the same as if you were at a branch in your hometown. Privacy laws, in particular -- although easy enough to manage when doing business locally -- can become a thorny issue when exchanging user identity information across international borders. Virtual directories take data from multiple sources, including other directories and databases, and present that data as a single virtual directory. Rather than move data into a new database or directory, which is what a metadirectory does, the virtual directory presents data as links. As you might expect, a virtual directory could serve as a core component of an identity-based network infrastructure (see "Toward a Federated Future," page 44).
