Solving the identity crisis
========================================================================
Posted September 3, 2004, 3:00 p.m. Pacific Time

Assembling an identity infrastructure is one of the most complex
challenges facing today's enterprises, but also one of the most
essential. From security to service provisioning, digital identity is
changing the face of today's networks.

Better security through identity
========================================================================
Posted September 03, 2004, 3:00 p.m. Pacific Time

The old "separate nations" network paradigm -- decentralized security in
which multiple departments using various applications manage access as
each sees fit -- is now passe. Security systems are going global, as
enterprises increasingly turn to identity management solutions from
vendors such as IBM, Netegrity, Novell, and Oblix as a means to better
align network policies and permissions with business goals, not just
IT's ideas of how a system should be managed.

Identity's role in SOA
========================================================================
Posted September 03, 2004, 3:00 p.m. Pacific Time

"Identity and Web services are closely related," says Jamie Lewis,
Burton Group's CEO and research chair. "It's almost a yin and yang."

Identity's federated future
========================================================================
Posted September 03, 2004, 3:00 p.m. Pacific Time

Walk up to an ATM anywhere in the world, insert your bank card, punch in
your PIN, and within minutes you can withdraw local currency from your
own account, no matter where you normally bank. Aside from a possible
service charge, the transaction is seamless. It's the same as if you
were at a branch in your hometown.

The global challenge
========================================================================
Posted September 03, 2004, 3:00 p.m. Pacific Time

As complicated as identity federation can be for U.S. companies,
globalization adds still further complexity. Privacy laws, in particular
-- although easy enough to manage when doing business locally -- can
become a thorny issue when exchanging user identity information across
international borders.

Radiant Logic, MaXware give directories a virtual twist
========================================================================
Posted September 03, 2004, 3:00 p.m. Pacific Time

Metadirectories and SSO (single sign-on) products tend to garner much of
the attention in the directory arena, but directory virtualization is
closing in. Virtual directories take data from multiple sources,
including other directories and databases, and present that data as a
single virtual directory. Rather than move data into a new database or
directory, which is what a metadirectory does, the virtual directory
presents data as links. As you might expect, a virtual directory could
serve as a core component of an identity-based network infrastructure
(see "Toward a Federated Future," page 44).
