WEEK IN REVIEW
=========================================================
1. Tech: Back to Earth with a Thud
>From Business Week (Topic: Intel), Sept. 7:
In the middle of the Sept. 3 tech wreck on Wall Street, chip
giant Intel's lowering of expectations for the current
quarter had at least one upside: It would now be easier for
other tech companies like 3Com, Cypress Semiconductor,
Integrated Device Technology, and Altera to do the same.

3. Internet's Speed Increases As It Turns 35 Years Old
>From The Washington Post (Topic: Internet), Sept. 5:
(Registration Required)
As the Internet turned 35 last week, Web speed-demons
claimed a new record for how fast data can be transmitted
over computer networks, announcing they had sent the
equivalent of a big fat DVD movie file from Switzerland to
California in a few seconds. The speed record was set by
teams from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech)
and CERN, the European particle physics lab in Switzerland.
Geeks will be pleased to learn that the computer scientists
dispatched 859 gigabytes of data in less than 17 minutes
across 16,000 kilometers of computer networks -- at roughly
6.63 gigabits per second.

5. Cellphones in Flight Face Technical and Social Hurdles
>From The New York Times (Topic: Wireless), Sept. 2:
(Registration Required)
Business travelers who think there are not enough hours in
the day, take note: in two years there may be a few more at
your disposal. In 2006 the nation's commercial airliners may
begin to allow passengers to make cellphone calls and
connect to the Internet throughout a flight. No longer will
passengers have to cram in their last cellular calls before
takeoff. Instead, they will be able to use standard mobile
phones to make and receive calls while in flight.

adapters worldwide for several models of its laptop
computers because of potential fire and electrical shock
hazards. The 56-watt adapters can overheat, cause damage to
the circuit board and melt through the case, the company and
the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
