COMMENT: Super Wealthy or Mass Affluent?
Dear A-Letter Reader:
Are you among the so-called 'super wealthy'? The Wall Street Journal
defines those folks as "persons who have a net worth of tens or hundreds
of millions of dollars." Or are are you just a lowly member of the "mass
affluent," which the Journal sees as those "with at least $100,000 in
investable assets." (This latter group is one of the fastest growing in
the US in recent years).
These arresting definitions arose in the context of a WSJ article
devoted to the belated recognition by some major American banks that
there are a lot of people of means who are not satisfied with the
bureaucratic way in which too many US banks treat their clients.
One of the major reasons for the founding of the Sovereign Society six
years ago was to gain easy access for our members to offshore banks
where personal treatment, asset protection and investment guidance are
all available. And where access is wide open to highly profitable
offshore investments that are unavailable in the US because of unneeded
SEC restrictions and government red tape.
Indeed "private banking" was an invention of Europeans, especially
in Switzerland. Two centuries ago Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1743-
1812), founder of the famous international banking dynasty, built his
family power with a bit of practical wisdom: "Give me control over a
nation's currency, and I care not who makes its laws." Acting skilfully
on this belief, the House of Rothschild filled a void, creating a
profitable continental money system that influenced the course of
European history by financing its rulers and wars.
But today you don't have to be a Rothschild in order to enjoy private
banking offshore. One aspect of Sovereign Society membership is the
